Learn Table Tennis from a National Champion

Our coach, Andrea Holt, is a 10x national champion, 2x Olympian, and represented England four times at the World Table Tennis (WTT) Championships. We are delighted that Andrea has teamed up with the Hilton Centre to offer Table Tennis coaching for kids in the Bolton area. There’s no one better qualified to teach table tennis to the next generation of players!

Andrea has a deep enthusiasm for coaching and centres the sessions around everyone having fun, while learning and developing new skills. Begin with the learning the basic shot techniques, before moving on to footwork, winning strategies, and mastering advanced serves.

Session Times

Tuesday 5pm – 6.30pm

Friday 6.30pm – 8pm

The lessons are for children aged 7 – 18 with a wide range of ages currently attending

How to Join

No booking is required. If your child is fine with the skills listed at the bottom of the page, then simply turn up at 5pm on Tuesday, or 6.30pm on Friday and join in! If you have any questions or special requirements then just have a chat with Andrea when you arrive.

£5 per session

The sessions are 'pay as you go', we accept cards or cash. All equipment is provided.
Table Tennis has over 300 million players worldwide, making it a great sport to introduce to children of all ages. It’s a fun, energetic activity with so many benefits for mental and physical health.
It's super fast! The ball can zip around at over 60mph. Playing helps build lightning fast reflexes.
Table Tennis works the mind just as much as the body. It helps kids improve focus, concentration, and quick thinking. It's even been used to help kids with ADHD.

Spin, spin, spin!

Elite players can spin the ball at over 8,000 RPM - more than most car engines! This makes the ball bend through the air like a video game.

Small Table, Big skills!

With the smaller court, everything happens so much faster than in tennis or badminton. You need to learn to think fast, move fast, and react like a ninja!

Every Tuesday & Friday

Parents are welcome to stay or drop off. If a parent already plays then we welcome volunteers to help out. Based in Horwich, we're easily accessible for kids wanting to play table tennis in Bolton, Chorley and surrounding areas.

Fun kids activity

The best learning happens while you're having fun, so the sessions are very much focused on enjoyment at the beginner stage. As they progress more activities are added to keep kids engaged and improving their skills.

Compete Equally

Table tennis rewards precision, agility, and quick thinking. Girls and boys match up equally in training and competition - right from the start.

A surprising workout!

One hour of table tennis can burn 300-400 calories - the same as a light jog! But it just feels like you're playing and having fun

All weather sport

No rain or snow can stop play here! Sessions are indoors, warm and dry all year round!

Play for life!

If you master the skills early on, you can play at a high local league level well into retirement. You won't win the olympics in your 60s, but you'll still beat most players!

FAQs

What Should Kids Wear?

T-shirt and sport shots or trousers. Dark sole trainers mark the floors so please don’t wear those!

Do Kids Need Their Own Bat and Balls?

We have lots of spare bats and balls for the kids to use. If you have one, then feel free to bring your own bat. However, not all bats are made equally so our coach may suggest using one of our bats. Starter bats are not able to put much spin on the ball – so they’re often best skipped altogether.

Can I Watch the Session?

Yes! We have lots of chairs within the main hall, as well as seating outside the hall if you’d like to use the time to get some work done!

Does my child need to have played before?

All players are welcome, whether they have played before or not. However, because the main junior session is a structured coaching programme, complete beginners may not be able to join in straight away.

To make sure everyone gets the most out of the session, new players are assessed on arrival and may be asked to complete a few basic skills first (such as ball control and simple rallying). If needed, they will start with a parent or volunteer helper until they’re ready to join the main coaching group.

We have added minimum requirements below to give you an idea of what is needed to start playing on the table, and to join the main coaching group. Help is always available though – we want everyone to feel welcome right from the start!

How does payment work?

£5 payment is taken during each session. You can pay by cash or by card. The first session a child comes to is free.

What ages is this available for?

The coaching sessions are for children aged 7 and above.

There are two sessions, do we have to come to both?

You’re welcome to come to both if you’d like, but no – there is no expectation of this! Just pick the day that works best for you.

Minimum Standards

To help with the smooth running of sessions, it would help us greatly if players are of a fairly similar standard.

We would therefore ask, as a minimum requirement, that your child is able to complete the skills listed below before attending a class.
